The correlational method can demonstrate three potential relationships between variables, positive, negative, or no relation. A positive correlation occurs if at the same time one variable increases the other variable increases too, a negative correlation occurs if one variable increases at the same time the other variable decreases, and finally if the variable neither increase nor decrease in response to one another. Finally, the social psychologist may want to determine whether the presence of one variable affects another than he or she would utilize the experimental method. Through the experimental method, it is possible for the social psychologist to alter one variable, the independent variable, in order to measure the influence it has on another variable, the dependent variable. Social psychologists use the scientific method to explore further phenomenon about development of human thoughts, emotions, and behavior in relation to the impact of others on these very characteristics. Essentially, the scientific method provides the field of social psychology with a systematic process to utilize in the quest to gain further insight into the complex nature of human beings. Beowulf, Perceval And Sir Orfeo - 1799 Words

1. All three characters, Beowulf, Perceval and Sir Orfeo all begin in different stages of their characters. Beowulf begins as â€Å"the mightiest man on earth† (Beowulf 196). Beowulf has already fulfilled a knightly duty of protecting the poor and the weak. While King Hrothgar is not poor, he is weak: â€Å"[Hrothgar] sat stricken and helpless, / humiliated by the loss of his guard† (Beowulf 130-1), he is unable to help himself, and that is why Beowulf offers his assistance. He says, â€Å"I have come to proffer/ my wholehearted help and counsel† (Beowulf 277-8). At the beginning of his story, Beowulf has already acquired much success and is respected by others. He does not arrive in Geatland alone, but rather with an impressive army of men. When the Shieldings’ lookout sees their arrival, he saw â€Å"shields glittering on the gangplank / and battle equipment being unloaded† (231-2). Thus, Beowulf serves as the bravest of the brave. His first challenge is to battle Grendel. He says, â€Å"No weapons†¦/ Unarmed he shall face me† (683-4). His statement follows the axiomatic rules or honor and engagement: battling on equal grounds. Because Grendel cannot fight with weapons, Beowulf will not either, which will make his victory even more honorable. After Beowulf defeats Grendel, he must defeat another villain. When Beowulf prepares to fight Grendel’s mother, he is â€Å"indifferent to death† (Beowulf 1443). When he battles Grendel’s mother, he does not display excessive pride, but rather acknowledges the

Create a raffle ticket corresponding to the numbers Free Essays

There several ways of being fair in the distribution of raises (or bonuses). It should be specific first that the 25,000 raise is a one time disbursement and not a continuing one. A fair distribution for raises can mean dividing the money equally among all those who would be receiving the raise, but this is not the common practice. We will write a custom essay sample on Create a raffle ticket corresponding to the numbers or any similar topic only for you Order Now One way to compute the distribution of the raises in compensation should consider the tenure of the services rendered. A fair distribution can mean that the longer the length of service rendered should have a larger share of the US$ 25,000.00. It can be done by summing up all the years of service of each employee then getting the percentage of years of service rendered. This is done by dividing the number of years rendered by one, by the total number of years everybody has rendered, multiply by 100, thereby deriving the percentage. This percentage is multiplied by 25,000 and the corresponding product should be the amount the individual will receive. Another way of having a fair distribution is divide the lump sum of 25,000 into unequal amounts, some higher, some lower and some average. Put the divided amounts in envelopes and number the envelopes outside. Make sure that the number of envelopes is equal to the number of employees. Create a raffle ticket corresponding to the numbers of envelops and make everybody draw a number. If the 25,000 will not be distributed, what can be done is to create a savings and loan association. From this association, the employees can borrow money for providential purposes and repay through salary deduction with interest earnings. At the end of a fiscal year, the earning from the savings association can be distributed equally among everybody. Â   How to cite Create a raffle ticket corresponding to the numbers, Papers

Lady Day The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday Essays - Billie Holiday

Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday The movie Lady Day: The Many Faces Of Billie Holiday paints an interesting, and thought provoking portrait of one of jazz and blues most charismatic, and influential artists. The incomparable talent of Billie Holiday, both truth and legend are immortalized in this one-hour documentary film. The film follows Holiday, also referred to as ?Lady Day? or ?Lady?, through the many triumphs and trials of her career, and does it's very best to separate the facts from fiction. Her autobiography Lady Sings The Blues is used as a rough guide of how she desired her life story to be viewed by her public. Those who knew her, worked with her, and loved her paint a different picture than this popular, and mostly fictional autobiography. Interview footage of her colleagues, fellow musicians, and friends such as Annie Ross, Buck Clayton, Mal Waldron, and Harry ?Sweets? Edison look back on their years of friendship and experiences with the woman they affectionately call ?Lady?. Their anecdotes, fond memories, and descriptive way of describing Holiday's unique talent and style, show the Lady that they knew and loved. The film also makes interesting use of photographs and orignal recordings of Holiday, along with movie footage of different eras. With the use of these devices, we get a feel for what Holiday's music meant for the audience it reached. The black and white footage from the thirties of groups of people merrily swing dancing, paired with a bumptious, and swingin' number Billie Holiday performed with Count Basie called ?Swing Me Count?, makes one wonder what it might have been like to actually be there. To wildly swing dance to the live vocals of Billie Holiday must have been an amazing experience, as this film demonstrates. The most enduring and alluring part of the film is the live footage of Holiday performing, either in a band with one of her idols, Louis Armstrong, or in her first film role as a maid, or in her later televised performances in the fifties. It was not Lady's vocal talent that made her what she was. It was her delivery, performance style, charisma, and impeccably beautiful dramatization of even the most banal little number that made an impression on audiences. The footage of her singing the song ?Strange Fruit? is one of the most amazing and alarming things in the film. As the audience looking in, we feel every word she sings, with a bit of awe, tinged with the horrid reality of what the song is about. This particular song was not recorded for many years due to the subject matter; lynching of African Americans in the South. This film shows Holiday as a enduring symbol of her art, a student of a life that was seldom kind or easy, a talented and alluring performer beloved by her audience, and a master of musical interpretation. I found the film to be highly enjoyable, and absolutely fascinating. I have always been a fan of Billie Holiday since I could remember, but it this particular film piqued my interest, and showed a true legend in both her prime, and the moments of her demise. It is done well enough to do justice to her work, as well as to her legend. I would definitely recommend it. Music Essays

The Stranger is Meursaults Essays

The Stranger is Meursaults Essays The Stranger is Meursaults Paper The Stranger is Meursaults Paper Essay Topic: The Stranger In the two works, The Stranger, by Albert Camus, and Night, by Elie Wiesel, Death is portrayed differently, and this sheds light on the different attitudes toward death in French and Jewish societies. In order to compare these two works of literature, I will supply evidence of death in these two works of literature, and explain how the authors portray the instances of death in the two works and how the cultural background of each of the novels is reflected through the portrayal of death in the novels. In The Stranger, I will focus on the death of Meursaults mother, the death of the Arab that Meursault kills, and Meursaults own death. In Night, I will focus on the death of Elies father. In The Stranger, The death of Meursaults mother is one of the events central to the plot of the book. It is the first event mentioned in the book (and I mean the very first), and it is one of the reasons that the end of the book turns out the way that it does. Camus portrayal of Meursaults mothers, or Mamans, as she is affectionately entitled in the book, death is as if her death is a serious matter, but only a natural action that had to be done sometime. He does this by referring to Meursaults relatively apathetic reaction to his mothers death. In example, the very first line of the book reads Maman died today. Or yesterday, maybe, I dont know. This shows that Meursault doesnt really grieve about his mothers death, which is really because he is somewhat disillusioned with emotions altogether, but, to the reader, it connotes the idea that death isnt really that big of a deal. Because Meursault talks about events like his dinner that evening and what time he rode the bus to get to the nursing home, it shows that he didnt really care much about his mothers death. Camus uses that apathy that Meursault has to set a standard in the readers mind that death doesnt really matter all that much. Another example of death in The Stranger is Meursaults killing of the Arab. Meursault does not take the action of killing the Arab man seriously. In his action of killing the Arab, Meursault doesnt do it because he has any particular animosity towards the Arab, but because Raymond told him to, and he has no reason not to listen to Raymond. In example, When asked if he thinks Raymond should Let the Arab have it, Meursault says I thought that if I said no hed get himself all worked up and shoot for sure. All I said was He hasnt said anything yet. Itd be pretty lousy to shoot him like that. (56). This shows that Meursault wasnt really killing the Arab because he cared about the issue that Raymond was animate about; in fact, he didnt even really want the poor man to die. In the act of killing the Arab, Meursault doesnt talk about having a motive for his action, but instead blames it on physical stimuli. All I could feel were the cymbals of sunlight crashing on my forehead and, indistinctly, the dazzling spear flying up from the knife in front of me. The scorching blade slashed at my eyelashes and stabbed at my stinging eyes My whole being tensed and I squeezed my hand around the revolver. (59) This shows that Meursault didnt even really have an emotional or pre-cognized reason for killing the Arab, so the death of the Arab wouldnt mean all that much to him. Therefore, Camus is again using Meursaults reaction as an example of his reaction to death. The last example of death in The Stranger, or LEtranger is in Meursaults own execution and death.

Speech Final about our last group project Essay

Speech Final about our last group project - Essay Example With the ever increasing multicultural diversification of the society these dynamics are therefore predicted to remain as a major concern for group workers like us volunteers. Team dynamics is determined by factors like, environment of the team, time, and composition of the team. The group dynamics can be categorized into five main domains: (1) patterns of interaction and communication processes, (2) cohesion and attraction that arises interpersonal, (3) influence and integrating socially, (4) control and wiled of power, (5) and the overall culture of the group. Comprehension of group dynamics is critical for effective practice with individuals together with the community in this case the school community. Therefore by ignoring the therapeutic power of dynamics of the group greatly reduces the ability of a worker like a volunteer to aid the members to attain their goals. This is very vital for any successful participation in volunteer work because it forms a benchmark for good workmanship. According to Engleberg & Wynn (p.245) argue that lack of training or wrong composition of the team will result in critical skill gaps that will most of the time lead to the decrease in the overall performance of the team. Moreover, the size of the team will influence the outcomes of the groups. By studying the relationship between the size of the group and group outcome in work places a negative relationship between the quality of the relationship among team members, size of the work group and organization was found. The processes of communication and patterns of interaction are paramount in group dynamics. These are very important components of social interaction that are an influence to the behavior and attitude of members of the group. The face to face group members have an experience of both verbal and non-verbal types of communication. Leaders who are effective in their work are to ensure that they listen attentively to the meaning
